Unemployment in Australia surged in January 2015 to 6.4 per cent from 6.1 per cent in December, its highest level since August 2002. The Bureau of Statistics estimates that South Australia and New South Wales led the rise in joblessness. The rise in New South Wales unemployment was driven by an estimated loss of more than 30,000 full-time positions. The participation rate in New South Wales actually eased, despite the state recently achieving the top ranking for Australia’s strongest economy.
This site presents recent unemployment rates (published in late December 2014) for the September 2014 quarter, in relationship to the new Legislative Assembly electorates. The site also shows the change in unemployment since the same time last year. The results show unemployment increased in a number of areas with large increases recorded in Batemans Bay (up from 7.9 per cent to 14.5 per cent) and large increases recorded in Wentworth LGA (up by 7.7 percentage points to 12.5 per cent). The December quarter 2014 issue of Small Area Labour Markets will be released in March 2015.
